Procalcitonin (PCT) is a hormone-free activity of calcitonin (calcitonin, CT) precursor, containing 116 amino acid residues and the molecular weight of 13KD. It consists of N Terminal-calcitonin-C Terminal three parts and in vivo the half-life is 25-30 hours. The Procalcitonin level in healthy human serum is very low, almost could not be detected. In systemic bacterial infection (especially sepsis, gram negative bacterial infection) patients, the serum PCT level increased rapidly. While in virus infection and tumor patients, PCT level is maintained in the normal range or elevated slightly. With the increased severity of infectious diseases, the level of PCT also increased. PCT is a specific index of infection of severe bacterial inflammation, and the reliability index of sepsis and inflammatory activities related to multiple organ failure.
